
We are currently seeking qualified Tigrinya interpreters in Sheffield to support the growing interpreting requirements across healthcare services, refugee support programmes, local authorities and legal sectors. Demand for Tigrinya-speaking interpreters continues to rise across Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire region as organisations work to support multilingual communities accessing essential services.

About the Role
As a Tigrinya Interpreter in Sheffield, you will assist Tigrinya-speaking individuals during important interactions with healthcare professionals, public sector organisations and legal representatives across a variety of settings.
Tigrinya interpreters are regularly required across major NHS organisations, including Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Children’s Foundation Trust. Additional interpreting opportunities are also available through Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, particularly within mental health, rehabilitation and community healthcare services.

- Housing and Tenancy Meetings
- Social Care Assessments
- School Admissions and Welfare Reviews
- Benefits and Integration Support Appointments
They also work alongside Sheffield City Council departments, refugee support organisations, schools and community programmes assisting newly arrived families and vulnerable individuals across the city. Some assignments may also involve supporting charities and community organisations working with East African communities in Sheffield.

What you’ll be doing (Scope of Work)
As a Tigrinya Interpreter, you will support professional communication between Tigrinya-speaking clients and service providers across multiple sectors. Your responsibilities may include:
- Providing accurate interpretation within healthcare, housing, legal and education sectors
- Supporting Somali-speaking families during medical appointments and welfare meetings
- Maintaining strict confidentiality and impartiality at all times
- Supporting clients and professionals in sensitive or complex situations
- Ensuring clear communication all while respecting cultural nuances and differences
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you should meet the following criteria:
- Fluency in Tigrinya and English
- Relevant interpreting qualifications such as DPSI, CI or NRPSI (preferred)
- Enhanced DBS certificate
- Two professional references and an up-to-date CV
- Valid proof of identity
- Previous experience in healthcare, housing, legal or public sector interpreting is an advantage
