Romanian-speaking interpreters are regularly needed throughout Newcastle and the wider North East region to help individuals access important day-to-day public services.

About the Role
As a Romanian Interpreter in Newcastle, you will provide language support for Romanian-speaking individuals attending appointments, assessments and public service meetings across a range of professional settings.
Romanian interpreters are commonly required within healthcare and community support services, particularly through NHS Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group. Interpreting assignments are regularly available for GP consultations, outpatient services, physiotherapy appointments, maternity care and occupational health discussions.
There is also strong demand within employment support and housing-related services across Newcastle and surrounding areas. Many Romanian-speaking residents require interpreting support during:
- Employment and Job Centre Appointments
- Housing and Tenancy Support Meetings
- Benefits and Welfare Discussions
- School Parent and Attendance Meetings
- Family and Community Support Reviews
There are also opportunities to support solicitor consultations, tribunal hearings and public sector appointments throughout the North East region.

What you’ll be doing (Scope of Work)
As a Romanian Interpreter, you will help service users and organisations communicate clearly during important appointments and discussions. Your responsibilities may include:
- Supporting the Romanian community during healthcare and welfare-related appointments
- Providing interpreting services across face-to-face, telephone and video assignments
- Handling confidential information professionally.
- Helping professionals and service users communicate clearly
- Understanding the cultural differences and making sure everything is interpreted correctly
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you should meet the following criteria:
- Fluency in Romanian and English
- Relevant interpreting qualifications such as DPSI, CI or NRPSI (preferred)
- Enhanced DBS certificate
- Two professional references and an up-to-date CV
- Valid proof of identity
- Previous experience in healthcare, housing, legal or public sector interpretation is an advantage
Please note: This is a self-employed position. You must manage your own HMRC registration and National Insurance.
