We are actively recruiting Tigrinya interpreters in Newcastle to support a growing demand across healthcare sectors, refugee support organisations, local authorities and community-based services. Tigrinya-speaking interpreters are regularly needed throughout Newcastle and the wider North East region to help individuals access essential support and public services.

About the Role

As a Tigrinya Interpreter in Newcastle, you will support Tigrinya-speaking individuals during important appointments and meetings across healthcare, resettlement and public sector environments throughout the city and surrounding areas.

Tigrinya interpreters are regularly required across healthcare organisations including Northumbria Healthcare Trust and NHS Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group. Additional interpreting opportunities are also available through NHS South Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group, particularly within community healthcare, mental health and wellbeing support services.

Assignments commonly involve supporting individuals during:

  • Refugee and Resettlement Appointments
  • GP and Community Healthcare Visits
  • Housing and Tenancy Meetings
  • School Admissions and Welfare Reviews
  • Benefits and Integration Support Appointments

Tigrinya interpreters frequently work alongside refugee support organisations, local councils and community outreach services supporting newly arrived families and vulnerable individuals across Newcastle and the wider North Eastern region. There is also ongoing demand within the Newcastle City Council, Gateshead Council and Northumberland County Council services.

We are actively seeking British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters, including registered and trainee interpreters to join our network.

What you’ll be doing (Scope of Work)

As a Tigrinya Interpreter, you will help service providers and Tigrinya-speaking clients communicate clearly across a range of sectors. Your responsibilities may include:  

  • Providing interpretation services across healthcare, legal, immigration and social care services
  • Helping Tigrinya-speaking individuals during asylum interviews and welfare appointments
  • Keeping all information private and remaining impartial at all times
  • Supporting both clients and professionals during sensitive conversations and appointments
  • Making sure communication is accurate while understanding cultural and language differences

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Fluency in Tigrinya and English
  • Relevant interpreting qualifications such as DPSI, CI or NRPSI (preferred)
  • Enhanced DBS certificate
  • Two professional references and an up-to-date CV
  • Valid proof of identity
  • Previous experience in refugee support, legal or public sector interpreting is an advantage 

Please note: This is a self-employed position. You must manage your own HMRC registration and National Insurance.
